All the music on this release comes from the original master tapes found in Oliver Postgate's underworld. Vernon Elliott was a master bassoonist and fine composer arranger. These recordings, made with his small ensemble are some of the most charming pieces ever made for children's television. Originally recorded for Ivor the Engine and Pogles Wood, this CD brings together over thirty tracks and also includes special effects devised by Oliver Postgate just for the programmes. For example, for Ivor we hear him chuffing, or rather pish-ti-cooing, and for Pogles we hear him making magic woodland noises. Musically this is Vernon Elliott on form, producing charming melodies, some with pace, others with a subtle underlying melancholy. This really is delightful music, all recorded in a small village hall somewhere in Kent lots of years ago. Simply wonderful
