Hello, I hope all is groovy. It's Friday and so we have another sublime 50p album for #50pFriday, this time it's a classic by percussion legend Sabu Martinez.
The album is called "Sorcery" and has a definite tribal / witchcrafty feel. I first bought this LP from Jam Records (a teeny tiny adventurous jazz shop in the Trocadero) way back in about 1992, and at the time I had never really heard anything quite as deep or serious. Which is why I bought it. It's also recorded very well, making the album all the more mesmerizing. I shall shut up about it now, although I did try and find a bit more about Sabu this morning as I remember being told he'd moved to Sweden, stopped jazz and started sellng perfume door to door. Turns out this was a load of old rot apparently, as he died in 1979 from an ulcer. Anyway, that aside, here it is, along with all the other albums of the last few weeks, all for the stupid price of just 50p each.
Sadly there is no record fayre today. So instead I'm finishing off the next Trunk release, an album of music by Bruce Lacey. There is a short thing about him here filmed by Ken Russell in the 60s. He no longer has the Penny Farthing.
Thanks for listening
Jonny
