At last! The 30 year wait is over. Started in 1979 by Alan Jefferson of Hull, England, Galactic Nightmare is finally here.
Originally it only took him about 6 years to complete this 90 minute space drama epic, working exclusively in his bedroom with only limited and quite moody equipment. Having heard War Of The Worlds in the late 1970s, he thought he could make something just as good. Galactic Nightmare is the result. Only ever available as a mail order C90 cassette (with Dolby) from his adverts in sci-fi and computer magazines, very few were sold. Possibly even none.
I came across the recording when the comedian Stewart Lee sent me a snippet via email a couple of year ago. He has been a fan of this album since his chum Dave (who worked at one of the Sci-Fi mags) played it to him. He knows all the words to all the songs. So do I now.
Once I heard it I wrote to Alan. And said I'd like to fulfil the dream and issue it as a double LP. This is the first ever Trunk double LP. There are just 500 copies of this monster (and no plans to issue a double CD at the moment either). The LP set has a gatefold sleeve, matt varnish, original pictures, drawing, notes, plus the inner sleeves are printed with the complete Galactic Nightmare storyfile complete with drawings, so you can read and sing along. The original recordings were mastered by Jon Brooks for this special release.
To me this is triumph, a deeply underground slice of folk art / music, an unforgettable, unique and utterly charming oddity. And the attention to detail is extraordinary. I guarantee you will never hear anything quite like it.
I have advance copies available now. They are £20 including postage in the UK (they will retail for much more in shops).
If you would like a copy here's what you have to do.
1) Get a £20 note. And a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.
2) Write on the paper your name, your address and that fact that you would like a 2 LP set of Galactic Nightmare.
3) Draw your own nightmare. This could be a scribble or something more imaginative. A winner will be chosen and they will get the LP and their money back. It matters not how good or bad your illustration may be. It's doing it that matters. Some early earlier examples of work sent it can be seen here.
4) Wrap the £20 in your paper and send it to the following name and address:
My Nightmare Will,
State 51,
17 Hereford Street,
London,
E2 6EX
If you live abroad and think you need a Galactic Nightmare, drop me an email.
Thanks for listening...
