Hello, I hope all is groovy.
Things are quite interesting here, working on a few odd bits for the next few months, more of which will be revealed in a few weeks.
But last night I was thinking about the #50pFriday album. As you know, last week I tried to be a bit relevant what with VW and that. This week I found out it was the anniversary of the death of Helen Kane. Who she? Well, if we go back to the 1920, this woman was earning $5000 a week as a singer and dancer, and was world famous for her Boop-Boop-A-Doop scatty singing. Her distinctive look and singing style was a major influence (apparently) on the creation of Betty Boop. So last night I dug out the original Helen Kane recordings and they are quite unique; her original 1928 version of "I Wanna Be Loved By You" was a massive hit, and there are 26 other tracks on the album including the classic "I Taut I Saw A Puddy Tat", which is agreat to sing a long to if you are as daft as me. The album can be found here.
While sorting this out last night I ended up watching two Betty Boop cartoons. The first one was banned for drug use. The second is just raving mad (and often wildly inappropriate in many ways by today's standards), but fascintaing to watch for their boundless creativity and strangeness. BB still has a massive draw, if you look, some of her on-line cartoons have been watched over 500,000 times. And having listened last night my kids are now obsessed with her and all morning have been boop-oopy-dooping around the house.
I'm now off to Spitalifield to find out that there isn't a record fayre on today.
Thanks for listening.
Jonny
