Hello, I hope all is groovy.
It has been a busy week this end, which included pre recording a 6 Music Freaky Zone all about animals. One of the recordings I played was from T S Eliot Reading Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats. This was a book made in 1939 from a collection of poems about cats originally written to his godchildren. It's an odd record from a very influential book (Cats the musical, Mungo Jerry etc) it's worth a listen and is today's #50pFrdiay album. It can be found here.
Last night I watched the new doc about Tubby Hayes. I mentioned it a week ago. I was impressed at what they managed to make on 1) a shoestring budget and 2) with endless enthusiasm. Seems like it is for sale now.
Last night I also found out that Mark Murphy died. This is very sad news indeed. One of my earliest musical epiphanies was listening to Rah. I've put it up again for 50p - it is an essential LP. I also watched this last night when I found out and raised a glass to the old jazz beatnik. I also own the rights to This Must Be Earth, his only UK LP (made with Ken Moule in 1969). I must get my skates on and make it available to all shortly. I spoke to Mark Murphy about the album a few years ago. It was made at a time where Mark was enjoying the many pleasures of jazz life (including all the drugs) and said that the LP was going very well - "until I pissed all over it Jonny". You will notice that the moon is on that LP sleeve. This watch was sold last night, and was worn on the sleeve of an astronaut while he walked on the moon (I think EVA is the correct term). Anyway, it went last night for $1.3 million dollars.
As I write this I hear that the Talk Talk telephone company have suffered a recent cyber attack. This reminded me of an amazing film I watched in the week which was the Saul Bass agencies' pitch to Bell Telephones about changing their logo and updating their company for the years ahead. It's an amazing chunck of period communication, argument and editing. It can be seen here.
It is now Friday. I have to go and get a very large drum kit from a house near this miniature village.
Thanks for listening.
Jonny
