Hello, I hope all is groovy. It's well groovy here - I'm in Oxforshire. Yes, a day / night away with my lovely wife. Although I did ruin it slightly by listening to The Fall a lot - yes RIP MES.
Even though I'm away I have made time to put together some more classic 50p Friday January things, which this week include Jacques Tati, Folk Jazz, Shirley Collins, Beatnik's and Moondog covers. Also, as well as RIP MES this week, we also said farwell to Hugh Masekela. He leaves behind a great deal of music, but few have heard of or are aware of The Jazz Epistles. They were South Africa's most important early (and pre apartheid) jazz band - with a line up that included Hugh Masakela and Dollar Brand. They left few recordings behind, but they are all now on the 50p Friday page. The work includes a cue called Gafsa which is one of the lovliest jazz numbers you could ever wish to hear. All the 50p Friday recordings including The Jazz Epistles can be found here.
This week I got sent several strange things to see. This amazing short documentary is about the Simpson family who in 1974 took their family on a 200 mile hiking / rowing "Summer Holiday" to the most remote parts of West Greenland. A brilliant little film. And this, sent to me by someone called Simon under the heading of "Communist Cliff". Also brilliant and quite mad.
And if you are a Fall / Mark E Smith fan, you may not have heard / seen him reading the footy results. Thanks to Alan Alan for sending this in.
I now have to pack up my pyjamas and drive back to London. Sadly there will be no chance of any record shopping on the way back.
Thanks for listening
Jonny
