Hello, I hope all is groovy. It's pretty groovy here. I also hope you had a good summer holiday - I managed to have a pretty entertaining break and only fell out with my kids a few times. I must say, going on holiday with kids and without a phone is my new way.
So, all back to work now. Phone back on and there is much going on this end, but first up there is no 50p Friday this week as I have a brand new old LP up for grabs.
Polynesia by The Buddy Collette Septet is an album I first heard on a bootleg CD back in the 1990s. I fell under it's peculair spell and it took me about 15 years to actually then find a real LP. Musically it's a little like the classic Eden Ahbez album, only much harder to find, far more odd and with a bit more death. The album opens with some sublime exotic jazz, there then follows some even more sublime singing by Marni Nixon (who sang as Maria in West Side Story), then Side Two kicks in with a series of peculiar musical sketches with narration, all based on ancient Japanese manuscripts. These are strange, not unlike the opening narration of Apocalypse Now, and spoken by a convicted murderer.
Polynsesia can be found here. Limited vinyl edition. Not in shops yet, only available here. Super wow. There was supposed to be digital files ready too, but seems like greedbag have somehow messed that bit up for now. So sorry about that.
In other news I have been busy sorting all the pledges for Wrappers Delight, and the book itself should be heading to the printers next week.
Also this week I have been setting up my studio again in order to attempt to make some more music. I shall keep you informed as to how well or how badly this goes. Also, for some odd reason I started looking up an old Arena documentary I saw and recorded on VHS back in the 1980s, all about the rise of Hip Hop. Called "Beat This - A Hip Hop History" it includes all the usual suspects, breakdancers, graffers, even Malcolm McLaren. A true classic. Worth watching here if you have 45 minutes.
I was now going to be off to the Spitz record fayre for a dig but I now have to be somewhere else for something else far less pleasurable.
Thanks for listening as always
Jonny
